The Southeast Alaska Seiners Association (SEAS) is a commercial fishing advocacy group made up of people who support and participate in the salmon fishery in southeast Alaska using purse seine gear. SEAS was formed in Ketchikan in 1968 by fishermen. Its goal is to help preserve a fishery that has been happening in southeast Alaska since the early 1900’s. SEAS members live and work in southeast Alaska. Over half our members are Alaska residents and all have deep ties to Southeast communities. what do we do? SEAS advocates for the seine fishery in a variety of arenas including; Alaska Board of Fisheries, Pacific Salmon Treaty, Regional and PNP Aquaculture Associations, Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game meetings, UFA, court proceedings, and environmental concerns. This is a dynamic process dependent on our natural world. Habitat, salmon populations, fisheries management, harvest, climate and ocean conditions, all contribute to the health of fish stocks. Fortunately, Southeast Alaska has some of the best fisheries managers and the most pristine habitat in the world. Purse seining is a clean, effective, and sustainable method for catching salmon. Fish come aboard live, and if something other than a salmon swims into the net, which is rare, it can usually be returned to the ocean unharmed. SEAS advocates to protect salmon habitat, grow and maintain already strong fish populations, and harvest sustainably in the traditional locations that we have fished in for generations.
