RIO BLANCO COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY INC Preserving our past for the future. The purpose of this organization is to serve as the steward of the White River Museum, and its holdings to protect and preserve the artifacts, antiquities, and properties donated to the museum and use them to educate others regarding the people who lived here before the 1800s or settled here after 1800. The museum itself was built in 1880 along with the building next door, the Garrison, and three other buildings were built after the last of the Ute Wars. in 1879. Two of those 5 buildings now house the museum. Items in the collection are dated from 1800. We maintain a 3rd building that holds our meeting area, research room, and archive space. In addition to the three buildings in the historic downtown campus, we offer the Milk Creek Battlefield Memorial Park and a fully restored Coal Creek Schoolhouse. We have around 5,000 visitors every year. We also offer guided tours in the museum, battlefield, and historic district.
