South Carolina needs more than 1,000 foster homes. The median age of children in foster care is 8 years old. Why getting involved in foster care matters: After being placed in five homes, there is a 90% chance that a child in foster care will be involved in the criminal legal system. 50% of unhoused people have spent time within the foster care system. Around 20% of teens become unhoused immediately after leaving foster care. 27% of 17 year olds in foster care have received substance abuse services.
