And to make matters worse, they don't want to become a burden, so they just keep quiet and suffer. They become isolated which is detrimental to their health. Take a second and imagine yourself in their shoes....What if you could no longer drive? How would you get to the doctor, get your eyeglasses, get your groceries and other necessities? That's why we do what we do. NESA lets them know we are here for them. And that they are never a burden. We began in 1984 when we realized that many citizens were isolated and had no one to help them. We welcome volunteers who want to "pay it forward" and connect with older people who have asked for help from the community. We have expanded our service area five times to fit the growing need of older adults. As more baby boomers age, the demand for our services continues to grow. We want to make sure we're here for you when you need us! Our Mission is to reflect God's Love by providing transportation and other services to enhance the quality of life and independence for seniors. Our services are FREE and help older adults continue to live in their own homes, around their familiar environment, which is where they want to be. This gives them peace of mind. What's unique about us is that we stay with them at the doctor's office. They don't have to feel any stress or anxiety about making sure someone is going to return them home. Blind since 1993 from an old war injury, Pete has outlived those he loves, and it's our volunteers who make sure he gets everything he needs to remain independent, and to continue feeling like a part of society. Pete said, "Food, rides, and good company...you can't put a price on that!" Like many clients, NESA volunteers are his only friends now. He's always thanking us and telling us how much we mean to him, but what he doesn't realize is how much he means to our volunteers. Helping folks like Pete and others means that they can continue being a part of society...that not only makes them feel good, it's great for the community and for San Antonio! Show Less
