Approval from the school principal is necessary for the selected contact, except in cases where the organization is a non-school-based club. All Abilities and Learning Styles The Mathematics Pentathlon® Program was created to be sensitive to the developmental differences and learning styles of ALL students. Students involved with this program not only develop a broad range of mathematics skills but also a maturity in working with others due to the program’s emphasis on cooperation and constructive competition. A Time-Tested Program Mathematics Pentathlon® is a time-tested Program of interactive problem-solving games, supportive curricular and instructional activities, and assessment tools for students in grades K-7. This motivational Program strengthens math concepts and skills, and aligns with National and State Mathematics Standards. A focus on conceptual understanding and the integration of spatial, computational, and logical reasoning are key attributes of Mathematics Pentathlon. Good Sportsmanship Beyond academics, parents, teachers, and coaches frequently remark how highly effective the Math Pentathlon Program is in fostering good sportsmanship. While learning how to play the games, students work in cooperative groups of four in order to communicate their ideas and strategize together as team members. Critical features of Teamwork include being respectful of others’ ideas as well as celebrating not only one’s own achievements, but also those of other team members. Academic Tournaments Students who have become proficient at the games may wish to test their problem-solving abilities with students from other schools at a National Mathematics Pentathlon® Academic Tournament. Teachers and parents can help these students gain leadership skills by preparing them for this level of involvement. If students intend to participate, they need to be very knowledgeable of the procedures and rules that apply to these tournaments.
