Mission: Maryland's First Sudbury School Est. 1998 Learning Their Own Way Imagine a school where each student’s creativity and curiosity guide their learning. At Fairhaven School, we trust students to learn in their own way, so they choose what they explore and when. Here, they become truly independent. With this freedom comes profound responsibility, which they learn by being part of a vibrant democratic community where everyone has a voice and a vote. For over 25 years, we have seen Fairhaven students grow into confident self-starters who are ready for anything the world has to offer. What is the Sudbury Model? What is the Sudbury Model? Watch Video What Our Students Say Play Video Freedom within a Framework The freedom to explore at their own pace is supported by an intentional framework designed to foster problem-solving, responsibility, and community engagement within a safe environment. Our Democratic Structure One person, one vote: from rules to budgets to hiring staff, every aspect of our school is decided by direct democracy, with each student and staff member having an equal vote. Learn More Our Campus On our 12-acre campus, students use their freedom to explore both indoors and outside, from the workshop and recording studio to the forest, fields, and stream. Learn More Our Staff Unlike traditional teachers who direct lessons and give grades, Fairhaven staff members are mentors and facilitators who support students in their self-directed education. Learn More From The Fairhaven Stream Podcast “I’ve seen Fairhaven kids graduate and be able to handle what comes next with so much grace, without being told what to do. They can be present, know what they have to do to get what they want, and go out and get it.” - Kelly Duffy, Fairhaven Parent listen “At Fairhaven, you learn to have no shame in asking questions. I asked relentless questions at my work place, and that’s how I got to the point where they asked me to step up into a management position.” - Zach Sanchez, Class of 2018 listen “Fairhaven really sparked my creativity in a lot of different areas, like learning how to use power tools. Now I have a big toolkit and do lots of DIY home improvement projects, and I have a little art room at home too, where I do all kinds of art projects.” - Salvia Lani, Class of 2010 listen “Fairhaven helped me strip myself of certain insecurities I had. I just wanted to be myself, and I finally had a place where I could do that. It was okay to be a nerd, okay to be different, okay to not know what was cool.” - Peter Carlson, Class of 2007 listen Come Meet Us Friday Feb 27 Potluck/Talkabout: Alumni Panel 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm Saturday Mar 21 March Open House 10:00 am - 1:00 pm Saturday Mar 21 March Open House 10:00 am - 1:00 pm Friday Apr 24 The Nature of Learning: A Q&A + Dinner 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm
